Nino Surguladze - Mezzo-Soprano - W Print

Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Nino Surguladze studied at the Tbilisi Conservatory of Music and won prizes in a number of prestigious international voice competitions including the Concours International de Chant de la Ville de Toulouse, the Francisco Vinas Competition of Barcelona, and the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.

Ms. Surguladze finished her training at the Academy Studio of the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, making her debut as Cuniza in Verdi’s Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio and joining Riccardo Muti for the opening of the 2003-04 season as Marie in a production of Rossini’s Moise et Pharaon. Since then she has sung many roles at La Scala, including Meg Page in Falstaff (cond. Muti), Olga in Eugene Onegin (dir. Graham Vick), Idamante in Idomeneo (cond. Harding), Fedor in Boris Godunov (cond. Gergiev), Solokha in Tchaikovksy’s Tcherevichki, Siebel in Faust and Valencienne in Die Lustige Witwe. Elsewhere in Italy, Nino Surguladze sang Niklausse in Les Contes d’Hoffman in Turin, Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust (cond. Plasson) at the Teatro Regio di Parma, Dorabella in Così fan Tutte and Cuniza at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, as well as Carmen in Bari, Macerata, Bologna and Naples and Fenena in Nabucco at the Arena di Verona and in Piacenza.

Ms. Surguladze made her debut at the Gran Theatre de Liceu in Barcelona at the age of 22 as Sonjetka in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. At the Liceu she then performed Federica in Luisa Miller opposite Samuel Ramey and Maddalena in Rigoletto, a role she sang also at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and at the Teatro Real in Madrid (with Leo Nucci in the title role). Elsewhere in Spain, Ms Surguladze gained great successes as Dorabella in Così Fan Tutte(opposite Barbara Frittoli) at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia. In the UK, Ms Surguladze performed Olga (Eugene Onegin) and Dorabella (Così fan tutte) at Royal Opera HouseCovent Garden in Londo and Clara in Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery at the Glydnebourne Festival. In Germany she has also sung Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito, Niklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Carmen and Idamantein Idomeneo in Hamburg and Polinesso and Ariodante in Ariodante in Frankfurt.

Nino Surguladze sang at the Salzburg Festival in 2009 as Sinaïde in Moise et Pharaon (cond. Muti), a role she then sang in Rome. In Tokyo, Ms. Surguladze sang Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Dorabella in Così fan tute and Carmen; in the USA, she sang Carmen in San Diego and Olga in Eugene Onegin with great acclaim in Chicago. She also sang Maddalena in Rigoletto in Cologne, Fenena in Nabucco at La Scala and Olga in Eugene Onegin at the Teatro Regio in Turin. 

Recent successes include: Stéphano in Roméo et Juliette at the Arena di Verona; Maddalena in Rigoletto (cod. Fabio Luisi) at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, in Bogota and at the Sferisterio Opera Festival in Macerata; Carmen in St. Petersburg, in Seoul, in Sassari; Amneris in Aida at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, in Bergen, in Naples under Pinchas Steinberg; Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana in Avignon; Adalgisa in Norma in Beirut; Luisa Miller in Naples and Budapest.  Moreover she performed: Rigoletto (Maddalena) at the Festival de Musica de Bogotà and at the Sferisterio Opera Festival in Macerata; she partecipated in the production of Nabucco and Roméo et Juliette at the Arena in VeronaLa Damnation de Faust (Marguerite) at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège; I Capuleti e i Montecchi in Bergen and Carmen with the New Zeland Opera on tour in Wellington, Christchurch and Aukland; Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni in Budapest.
